Video poker has a correct play for every hand, and you're allowed to look it up. In most casinos, a strategy card at the machine is completely fine.
Is it allowed?
Generally, yes. Video poker is you against the machine, so a reference card gives you no unfair edge over anyone. Some casino gift shops even sell them.
Rules can differ by casino. If anyone asks, it's a printed strategy list, nothing more. Electronic devices that help you play are a different matter, so leave those out.
Match the card to the game
A strategy is built for one game and one pay table. A Jacks or Better card is wrong for Double Double Bonus, and partly wrong even for short-pay Jacks or Better.
Check that the card names the exact game and pay table you're playing.
How to use one
- Find your hand's best option, starting from the top of the list
- Take your time on hands you're unsure of. The machine will wait
- Note the hands you keep looking up. Those are the ones to learn
Prepare before the trip
A card is a safety net, not a substitute for knowing the game. Practice at home until the common hands are automatic, and you'll only need the card for the odd ones.
Free online trainers and strategy lists make that easy. An hour of practice before a trip is worth more than any promotion.
