Comps and players clubs

On a good pay table, what the casino gives back can be a real share of what the game costs you. Almost nobody counts it.

How it works

Your players card tracks coin-in: everything you put through the machine, win or lose. Points, cashback and comps are all paid on coin-in.

That means you earn the same whether a session goes well or badly. It also means faster play earns more, and costs more.

Cashback adds to your return

A cashback rate is a percentage of coin-in. On a 99.54% game, 0.2% cashback makes the game worth 99.74% to you.

On a short-pay machine it barely helps. Cashback on top of a good pay table is how serious players get close to even.

What to ask at the club desk

  • How many points per dollar of video poker play, and what a point is worth
  • Whether video poker earns at a lower rate than slots. It often does
  • Which days have point multipliers or free-play promotions
  • How mailers and room offers are earned

Don't chase the points

Promotions are built to make you play more, at higher stakes. A multiplier that pushes you past your bankroll costs more than it pays.

Take what you'd have earned anyway. The game and the pay table come first.

Coming: casino-by-casino pay tables. We're building a record of the full-pay machines players actually find, with the date each one was seen, so you'll know where to go before you book. Until then, every guide here works on any casino floor.
