Video poker machines built into a bar top are some of the most popular seats in any casino. They're social, comfortable and close to a drink.
What you gain
- Company. Bar-tops are where regulars talk, and where a solo traveler can find conversation
- Drinks. At many casino bars, players who keep playing get drinks comped. Ask the bartender how it works there; policies vary and some bars track play
- Comfort. A real seat, a counter for your drink and a break from the noise of the main floor
What you often give up
Bar-top machines often carry weaker pay tables than the main floor. The casino knows many bar players aren't reading them.
The difference can be several percent. On a short table, comped drinks are an expensive way to save on beer.
How to decide
- Read the pay table first, exactly as you would anywhere else
- If it's close to full pay, enjoy the bar
- If it's short, play the main floor and buy the drink. It will usually cost less
Bar etiquette
Tip the bartender as you would at any bar, even on comped drinks. If you're done playing, give up the seat when the bar is busy.
